About the Photographer:

If asked to describe myself in one word, I would say that I am a storyteller. The language that I sometimes use is medium and large format black and white film photography, which I think of as a perfect alchemy of art and science. Other times it is through alternative photographic processes such as cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, kallitype, and carbon transfer prints. These were originally printed from film negatives, but today we use negatives printed on modern inkjet printers. This amalgamation of 19th century processes with 21st century technology gives me greater control over the final print and is, in my opinion, a wonderful closing of the creative circle. I also enjoy the craftsmanship involved in making developing and fixing compounds from raw chemicals, and creating light-sensitive paper with my own hands.

Often the experience surrounding a photograph is as interesting to me as the picture itself, and when that happens, I enjoy writing about the things I saw or felt. Some of these stories have become a series of word-picture diptychs from my travels in Cuba in a book that was published in 2025. I am a member of A New Leaf Gallery in Floyd, Virginia, and my work can be also be found online at www.danhenderson.photo.
