About the Artist:
After ending a career in commercial and corporate real estate in both Vermont and Virginia, Kay then divided her time between Norfolk and Mathews County, Virginia. In 1999 she opened a retail store/gallery which showcased regional artist in Mathews, Virginia.
Kay began to pursue her interest in art with mosaic tile, glass wall art and painting in acrylic with mostly a primitive and folk art style. While visiting Key West in the winter of 2008, she was introduced to oil painting under the guidance of noted and published Key West artist Letty Nowak. She continued her interest in oil painting by taking private lessons from the late Charles Kello, attending numerous workshops from Key West to Maine and also enrolling in online courses. Kay uses a limited palette of five colors plus white to capture atmosphere, light and shadows. During the summer of 2008, Kay made the decision to close her store in order to focus on painting full time. She returned to Norfolk in May of 2016 as a full time resident.
Kay was born in eastern North Carolina and grew up in eastern Virginia, so landscapes that reflect beautiful marshes, beaches and water give her inspiration. She also finds inspiration from her travels and in following and studying the works of numerous contemporary artists.
In January of 2020, Kay was the featured artist and Honorary Chairman of the Nansemond Suffolk Academy 34th Annual Art Show and Sale. Her artwork has also been used for the cover of the Mathews Community Foundation Annual Report and the cover of “Dancing With Horses” a book of poetry.
