About the Artist:

Super Heroes, Weasels and Crawdads

I proudly boast that my super heroes in painting for the last 12 years are my grandchildren and the elementary students that I used to teach. They all go excitedly to an easel or “weasel,” as some of them called it. They paint freely, intuitively and seemingly without structure.

Their free, in the moment, painting at the easel inspires me constantly.

However, I know that the layers of cool and warm interchanges of strong color in my work are anchored by my past painting teachers and colorists from VA Tech in the early 1970s — Victor Huggins and Maryann Marmon.

I also value the continuing feedback and support of my long-time painter friends and colorists, Ron Boehmer and Marcia McDade. I am thankful for the patience and encouragement of my husband, Ricky Terrell, the fearless renaissance man, talented carpenter and intuitive passionate drummer and singer.

I prefer to paint from observation outside, when possible. It is in the electrically changed moments of direct observation that I can paint without structure, just like a child! It is there that I can have a frenetic dance with the visual responses of color around me.

My latest paintings include studies of the rapids and water stretches of the Cowpasture River in Bath County where the light flickers in concert wit the roar of the rushing water, all of which are accompanied by the rhythmic movement of sweat bees, gnats and crawdads.
