About the Artist:
“My desire is to create art that captures the viewer’s attention, allowing them to escape, if only for a moment.”
Jinx Constine has been creating art for as long as she can remember. Born in New York, her family moved to Richmond, Seattle and Chicago before returning to Virginia in the 1970’s. Her father, an advertising executive and watercolorist, and her grandmother, a decorative painter, introduced Jinx to the world of painting. She studied art history, graduating from the University of Virginia. After graduation, she took a different road as an investment professional. During this time, art was relegated to the back burner, although never far away. Classes taken at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and workshops with local Virginia artists such as Nancy Witt, John Morgan, Diane Detamore and Shelly Bechtel Shepherd, kept her artistic education alive. Years later, Jinx realized that art needed to be a bigger part of her life. Between a summer workshop with Laura Loe and workshops/classes with Jane Joyner, Henry Issacs, and David Tanner, Jinx realized that she wanted to focus on landscape painting.
Recently, she has been trying her hand at plein air painting. While she has found plein air painting challenging, Jinx is hooked on painting outside, finding the benefits of capturing the light of a rapidly changing environment adding a clarity to her art. She credits the plein air workshops she has attended with Tennessee artists, Lori Putnam and Anne Blair Brown and Utah artist, John Poon, with helping shape her approach to outdoor painting.
“As a contemporary landscape painter, I want my paintings to help transport the viewer to a place that takes them away from their everyday cares, a place that might be special to them, be it a memory, a real place, or somewhere they would like to visit. While the scene I paint might be real, I try to paint the impression of the scene rather than the actual spot. Painting for me is like meditation – an escape from reality. It is so easy for me to get lost in a painting before I realize that hours have passed. My desire is for the viewer to experience a similar feeling.”
In addition to landscape painting, Jinx loves what the freedom of creating an abstract piece brings to her creative practice. “When I start an abstract painting, I typically have an emotion or energy I want to convey. I find the beginning of the process exhilarating. I love the possibilities of a blank canvas or a piece of paper. I start with a color combination in mind, and the painting begins to paint itself and I just follow, looking for areas to balance or contrast colors or textures with rhythmic brushstrokes.”
